Masks Across History

One being. Many names.

Across centuries and civilizations, old powers leave traces beneath new identities. The Thousand Mask archive treats mythology as a fractured historical record rather than a set of unrelated stories.

ᚱ
Hidden Orders

The people who remember.

Secret keepers, oath-bound defenders, scholars, scouts, and survivors preserve truths that official histories would rather turn into legend.

ᛏ
Relics & Language

Objects that refuse to stay ordinary.

Weapons, gems, marks, runes, and fragments of the First Tongue connect human history to something older and more dangerous.

ᛇ
Spin-Offs

The world beyond the main saga.

The Thousand Mask framework allows the mythology to move through other regions, eras, and conflicts while remaining connected to the same hidden cosmology.

The Hidden Oath
What it is: a multi-generational human resistance descended from Hakon’s refusal to accept the gods at face value. It preserves fieldcraft, old records, specialized orders, and methods for identifying or resisting the influence of the northern powers.
The Blue Grove
What is known: a secluded place southwest of Skallgard that becomes central to Hakon’s growing distrust of the powers reshaping the North. Later Varrkyn records treat the Grove as a dividing line between the world before Hakon entered it and the road that followed. The archive does not reveal what he found there.
The First Tongue
What is known: an older language whose words appear capable of carrying more than meaning. It is rare, dangerous, and poorly understood even by people who have spent generations preserving fragments of it. Why Soren can sometimes answer it is one of the questions Book One is meant to uncover.
The Masks
What is known: names in this world are not always the same thing as identities. The Thousand Mask archive tracks recurring symbols, titles, stories, and powers across cultures without assuming that every old name belongs to a separate being—or that a familiar name tells the whole truth.
Relics & Remnants
What is known: some objects and places refuse to remain ordinary after contact with the older conflict. Weapons, gems, marks, ruins, and fragments of lost records can preserve traces that later generations misunderstand, mythologize, or deliberately hide.
The Northern Powers
What is known: Odin, Freyja, Thor, Tyr, and the other powers surrounding the northern upheaval are not interchangeable personalities. They use different methods, want different things from humanity, and do not always appear to agree. How they are connected—and what they truly are—is part of the larger mystery.
Mikael
What is known: a warrior and teacher whose knowledge of the northern powers is far older and deeper than the Varrkyn initially understand. Odin’s circle seems to recognize him, and old stories attach more than one name to him. Mikael offers very little explanation about what those names mean.
What the war is really about
The recurring question: who gets to choose what a person becomes? The conflict repeatedly turns on consent, memory, inherited identity, rescue, and whether saving someone gives the rescuer the right to define them afterward.
